Lahinch, Ireland (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A busy summer of international duty continues for UVA Athletics as two UVA golfers helped Team USA lift the Arnold Palmer Cup over the weekend at Lahinch in Ireland.
Two performances from two Cavaliers helped seal the victory for Team USA. Amanda Sambach won a 2&1 contest with Adela Cernousek of Texas A&M. Sambach was behind by 1 stroke on hole 8 but came back to take a lead she did not relinquish after hole 10.
Ben James took on Max Kennedy of Florida State in the men’s competition. Kennedy had a one-up advantage that was soon nullified by a James birdie on the 15th hole. After three successful putts to make par on the last three holes, nothing separated the two golfers, and so the match finished in a tie, earning an important half point for Team USA. It was Team USA’s first win outside the USA since 2018 at Evian Resort Golf Club in France.
Both James and Sambach hope to join the 125 former Palmer Cup participants who have earned PGA or LPGA cards.
