CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Concerns over student safety have prompted the University of Virginia’s Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) to take decisive action, suspending all UVA fraternity events for the next three weeks. The decision comes after the indefinite suspension of the Kappa Sigma chapter last week, following an incident where a pledge was hospitalized after falling down the stairs following heavy drinking.

In response to these events, the student-led Council has extended the suspension to include all social events and new member activities. The suspension, effective immediately, aims to address safety concerns and ensure accountability within the fraternity community. An IFC statement described a commitment to fostering a culture of accountability, respect, and inclusivity within the community.

The suspension will be in effect until the strike of midnight on March 20, 2024, which the Council says is meant to allow for time for evaluation and implementation of necessary safety measures.
