CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – University of Virginia Grounds are notoriously sketchy with cellular service, and new partnership is operating right now between UVA and Comcast using new technology to enhance connectivity. Comcast Senior Vice President of Wireless Partnerships and Development, Justin Markle says this deployment uses Citizens Broadband Radio Service — or CBRS Spectrum — to provide high-performance cellular voice and data service in areas with high traffic and challenging indoor environments.

The user doesn’t have to do anything. Markle says they partner with different participating carriers, and the device automatically connects with these radios like they’re connecting to a tower. He says this can also offer a communication channel for emergency operations in hard-to-reach areas, or for university employees as the university sees fit.
