Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): The word of the day for Virginia Basketball on New Years Eve is Revenge. The NC State Wolfpack are the last squad that the great Tony Bennett faced as head coach of the UVA Men’s Basketball team. The game ended in heartbreaking fashion during last year’s ACC tournament, with the Wolfpack winning by eight points in overtime 73-65, before making it all the way to the Final Four. Virginia fell 67-42 to Colorado State in the first game of the NCAA tournament to end their 23-11 regular season in disappointing fashion. Now with head coach and several former players gone, the Wolfpack will be guests at John Paul Jones Arena tomorrow afternoon at noon. Much like the Virginia Team this year, NC State has a new look this year. Most of the Final Four team from last year is gone: DJ Burns, DJ Horne, Mohammed Diarra, and Casey Morsell, four key contributors from last year’s team that all played in 40+ games, and combined for almost 2,000 points, are not members of the team anymore. However, Jayden Taylor, who put up 458 points, and average of 11.2 ppg in 41 games, remains present. Taylor has continued his form from last season and has improved his average to 12.4 points a game. Bowling Green transfer guard Marcus Hill has been the story of the year so far for the Wolfpack. Though his three-point shot is lacking, he’s kept up a 50.5 field goal percentage, going 56-111 from FG range. They are also not a stellar rebounding team, being outdone on the boards by their opponents 434-402, on average 36.2-33.5. A big lineup and a burst of energy at the right time could be enough for the Hoos to pull off an upset in a weak ACC. However, all bets are off once the players hit the court. One bet you can make as a fan though, should the Hoos pull out a victory on New Year’s Eve 2024, it will be for Tony.
