CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia moved to 4-0 with a 104-78 blowout of Marshall on Saturday as the Ryan Odom era continues to launch on a record offensive pace.
Thijs DeRidder scored 23 points, the third time he’s reached at least 20 in the first four games, and UVA put up its most points in a game since going for 107 against VMI in 2008.
“There were some times out there where it was like, ‘OK, the guys are really imposing their will and might on the game,’” Odom said.
The Cavaliers have scored over 80 points in the first four games of a season for the first time since 2006.
“You have to have the combination of offense and defense to be at your best,” Odom said. “Certainly our guys did a nice job of that in the first half. You have to have both throughout.”
The win made Odom just the second-ever UVA basketball coach to open his tenure 4-0, joining Henry Lannigan (1905-06).
Malik Thomas scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half as the Cavaliers jumped out to a 61-33 lead at the break. The 61 points were the most UVA has scored in half since a 2007 matchup with Gonzaga.
Dallin Hall also had 18 and Johann Grunloh added 16.
“Part of being able to play this style is having the depth in order to do that,” Odom said. “We like our team and the collection of guys we put together.”
Virginia forced 12 of Marshall’s 15 turnovers in the first half.
“I thought at the beginning of the game, we let Virginia’s pressure bother us,” Marshall coach Corny Jackson.
