CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Orange basketball uniforms made their return to the floor at the John Paul Jones Arena last night, as the Hoos battled the #21 Memphis Tigers in front of a raucous crowd. Ron Sanchez and his men started the night strong with a spirited first half, outscoring the visitors 30-21. Elijah Saunders led the Hoos with 15 points, shooting 4-7 from the field, including 12 of those points coming from three-point range. In a true team effort, Taine Murray had a bounce-back performance, going 5-9 from the field and chipping in with 14 points. Anthony Robinson, seeing his first action of the year, was also impressive, notching six boards in 10 minutes. However, as the game wore on, the Hoos slowed down, and PJ Hagerty sped up, finishing with 27 points, five rebounds, five assists, and went a whopping 10-11 from the free-throw line as the Hoos struggled to contain him. Memphis rode the momentum and put up 43 in the second half, outscoring the Hoos and winning the game by a heartbreaking score of 64-62. American University awaits the Hoos on Sunday, as they look to rebound before welcoming NC State to JPJ for a New Year’s afternoon showdown on December 31st.
