Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville’s appointed “Good News Czar,” Mark Lorenzoni, shared an uplifting update on local community events and inspiring stories out of the UVA athletics program. Joining Morning News, Lorenzoni highlighted a major middle school track meet hosted by UVA, which drew 600 student athletes from 23 area schools. “It was all Atlantic and the field was beautiful,” he said, noting that even retired collegiate athletes returned to help. “One is the national champion, 800 is the Shane Cohen,” Lorenzoni added, referring to former UVA stars who volunteered at the event.
Lorenzoni also shared the success story of Jenny Schilling, a runner who moved from the UVA club team to varsity and is now an ACC champion. “Two years later, she’s now the ACC champ in the 10,000 meters… she’s going to the NCAA,” he said proudly. He emphasized how moments like these reflect the heart of local sports: passion, growth, and community impact.
In addition to sports, Lorenzoni spotlighted upcoming community events such as the Freedom Run for veterans and the Bruce Barnes Mile fundraiser, as well as recent gatherings like the Memorial Day community walk through historic cemeteries. “It’s an easy thing to do,” Lorenzoni said of spreading positivity. “It’s so easy to find so many good things right here in our neighborhood.”
