CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The trial of Virginia State Trooper Logan Pingley, who is facing a felony charge of extortion in writing after leaving a threatening on an Albemarle County woman’s door in November 2024, has been delayed.
Pingley’s case had been set for trial Friday in Albemarle County Circuit Court, but the trial is no longer on Judge Cheryl Higgins’ docket, Circuit Court Clerk Jon Zug confirmed to Cville Right Now.
A woman told Cville Right Now in June that her boyfriend found a note on her apartment door shortly after 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 that read, “You’re not safe here” and “F— around and find out.” The couple reviewed doorbell video footage, then contacted the Albemarle County Police Department.
Police identified and then charged Pingley, who is on administrative leave pending the outcome of this case and an internal investigation by the VSP Professional Standards Division. He was arrested on June 4 of this year.
At the time, Pingley’s defense attorney said he was planning a First Amendment defense for the trooper.
“Trooper Pingley is on the video, leaving the note. We’re not going to dispute the obvious,” attorney Brady Nicks told Cville Right Now in June. “The two central issues in this case are, that he was operating within the protection of his First Amendment right to free speech, so that no crime had been committed, and that this alleged victim inadvertently received this note. She was not the intended recipient of the note.”
