Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) : UVA Golf Head Coach Bowen Sargent is the first beneficiary of the new Tony Markel Family Men’s Golf Head Coaching Endowment. The announcement, made yesterday courtesy of the Virginia Athletics Foundation and Virginia Athletics, unveiled a three-million-dollar endowment to aid the university’s golf program.
Markel is a 1964 graduate of UVA and has already contributed to the 2019 endowment of Tony Bennett’s Basketball coaching position, alongside Tom Dean, in 2019. When asked about the endowment, Markel said “As a second-generation graduate of four at the University of Virginia, I have been cheering on the Hoos for over 80 years, the opportunity to endow Tony Bennett’s first-class basketball program several years ago has proven to be one of the most gratifying things I have ever done philanthropically, so when I had the opportunity to do something similar for Bowen Sargent’s golf program, I jumped at the chance.
Coach Sargent said of the news “The naming of our head coach position in honor of his [Markel’s] family will serve as a resource for generations to come and will provide a lasting source of funds for the Virginia men’s golf program.”
Sargent is about to enter his 21st season as head golf coach for the Hoos. In his two decades at the helm, he has supervised 26 tournament victories, three ACC individual championships, and the highest NCAA finish (5th) in program history.
