CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) –The Tom Sox lost a heartbreaker on Wednesday in extra innings as they fell to the Covington Lumberjacks 7-6. This loss came on the heels of a series split with the Harrisonburg Turks, who were just two games behind them in the Valley League Southern Division. The Sox had a chance, entering play Wednesday to widen their advantage, but it was their play in the late innings that let them down.

The game began well enough, with Sox starter James Hayes pitched 3 full innings surrendering only one run. On the other side, the offense jumped over Covington starter Kevin Rodriguez, thanks to a 2 run double from first baseman Caden Ferraro, and a sacrifice fly from third baseman Cooper Blauser. One more run in 4th from another Ferraro double made it 5-1 Tom Sox at the midpoint of the game. Covington designated hitter Chenar Brown hit a three-run home run in the 6th inning, as the Tom Sox bullpen lost control of the game. Brown notched another hit in the 8th, a single to cut the Sox lead to 1. Covington then completed the comeback in the 9th thanks to poor infield defense. Lumberjack first baseman Gregory Melo got the hit, to make it 5-5 in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Mummau clawed back the lead from Covington’s Cesar Valera in the 10th, scoring on a Dean Mihos double to bring the score to 6-5 in favor of the visitors. However, clever baserunning on sacrifice bunt and fielder’s choice in the bottom of the 10th to win the game.

The Sox are back in action this evening against the Waynesboro Generals, and again at home on Saturday against the Culpepper Cavaliers for Holiday on the Hills Night.
