CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Charlottesville Tom Sox (28-14) secured a 19-2 victory over the Culpeper Cavaliers (22-22) on Sunday night, advancing to the Valley Baseball League (VBL) championship series.
This marks their third consecutive appearance in the championship and sixth in franchise history.
The win, held at Willie T. Barnett Field, tied the franchise record for most runs scored in a game and was achieved in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd.
The Cavaliers initially took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Tom Sox quickly responded with five runs in their half of the inning. The onslaught continued with seven more runs in the third and additional runs in subsequent innings, leading to a commanding 18-2 advantage by the end of the fourth. The Tom Sox added one more run in the sixth inning to finalize the score.
Thomas Whelan and Ayden Alexander led the pitching efforts for Charlottesville, combining to allow only two runs over seven innings while striking out six. The Tom Sox offense was highlighted by key contributions from several players, including Dean Mihos, Ryan Wynn, Robbie Lavey, Sam Mummau, Ethan Gibson, Colby Wallace, Caden Ferraro, and Cooper Blauser.
Charlottesville will host the opening game of the VBL Championship Series against the Purcellville Cannons on Monday night. The game will take place at Willie T. Barnett Field at 7 p.m.
