Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In recognition of National Volunteer Month, Virginia Peale of The Center at Belvedere joined a local broadcast to spotlight the crucial role volunteers play in supporting the community. With nearly 400 volunteers lending their time and talents, the Center thrives thanks to their dedication. “They donated more than 40,000 hours of their time,” Peale shared during the interview. “It’s kind of amazing.”
Volunteers at The Center are engaged in a wide range of activities, from administrative work and program leadership to event support and facility upkeep. Peale emphasized that the impact is equivalent to 18 full-time staff members. The Center also connects members with volunteer opportunities across nearly 40 area nonprofits, thanks to a coordinator who matches individuals based on their interests and availability. “She can really match you up with the perfect position,” Peale said.
Beyond the numbers, volunteering contributes significantly to personal well-being. Peale highlighted the proven mental and physical health benefits. “It lowers your blood pressure. It keeps your brain sharp,” she said, noting how the social and purposeful nature of volunteering improves quality of life. For anyone looking to get involved, the Center invites the public to their weekly Welcome Wednesday event, held at 10 a.m. to introduce newcomers to their vibrant community.
