Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a recent discussion on the Live Well Series, Dr. Steven Quay, CEO of Atossa Therapeutics and renowned cancer researcher, shared critical insights into the link between alcohol consumption and cancer. Alcohol ranks as the third leading preventable cause of cancer, contributing to nearly 100,000 cases annually. Dr. Quay illuminated the biological mechanisms underlying this risk, emphasizing the need for public awareness.
“Half the people don’t really understand that relationship,” noted Dr. Quay. This lack of knowledge highlights the importance of education in reducing cancer risks. He further explained that alcohol consumption is linked to seven types of cancer, including liver, breast, and esophageal cancers, driven by DNA damage, oxygen damage, and hormone disruption.
Reflecting on societal norms, Dr. Quay stated, “Culturally, smoking was very accepted… maybe alcohol is different, maybe it won’t go down quite as much, but I think being aware of it will help.” He proposed that warning labels on alcoholic beverages, similar to those on cigarette packs, could play a pivotal role in shaping behavior.
As the Surgeon General’s advisory prompts reflection, Dr. Quay’s emphasis on informed decision-making highlights the importance of aligning present choices with a vision for a healthier future.
