Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Economic analyst Jill Schlesinger joined Morning News to break down the latest in U.S.–China trade developments and offer advice to college graduates entering a complex job market. Amid tense tariff negotiations, the two countries have agreed to a 90-day pause, reducing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30% and Chinese tariffs on American goods to 10%. “It’s a 90-day period where we’re basically like, ok, 10% tariffs on everything… but they’re going to probably cut a deal,” Schlesinger explained, noting that the stock market is reacting positively.

Despite the market rebound, Schlesinger warned listeners not to grow complacent. “It doesn’t mean we’re not going to slow down or that we’re not in a recession this second or that we won’t have a recession,” she said, adding that negotiations are ongoing and uncertainty remains. She reiterated that although the economy appears to be recovering, “don’t panic on the way down and don’t jump in on the way up,” emphasizing the unpredictable nature of global markets.

Schlesinger briefly shifted focus to graduating college students, offering wisdom sourced from young professionals. “Your job does not have to be your identity… it is not a linear path,” she said, encouraging graduates to remain flexible. Some of her top advice? Write thank-you notes. “Old people like me love a thank-you note,” she joked, highlighting the importance of gratitude and networking in career development.
