CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW/AP) – A massive technology outage that caused disruptions worldwide also struck our community this Friday, affecting essential services across our area. Originating from a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, the incident impacted users of Microsoft Windows.
The extent of the global tech outage reached into every corner of Charlottesville, from Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) to UVA Health, and beyond, disrupting flights, medical services, and government operations. CrowdStrike has acknowledged the mishap, not linked to any cyberattack, and said on Friday they would continue to work on a resolution.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO)

- Lunchtime Delta flights to Atlanta and New York are delayed until the afternoon.
- Flights arriving from those destinations today are also delayed.
- United flights to DC today are canceled.
- UPDATE 8:50am:
- The online arrivals and departures check board at CHO are back up after being out shortly after 8am.
- As of 8:42am, there were eight delayed departures for flights into the early afternoon.
- Flyers are advised to keep updated and check their flight status before arriving at the airport.

- The website Down Detector recorded continued outages in services at Visa, ADT Security, Amazon, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines.
- Looking at the board at CHO just after 6am, there were only a couple of delays at this time, but nearly everything was still on schedule.
UVA Health
- UPDATE 10:20am:
- UVA Health is on a modified schedule due to the Microsoft outage.
- UPDATE 9:30am:

- UVA Health is being impacted by a worldwide system outage affecting computers that run on Microsoft Windows.
- As a result, UVA Health is operating on a modified schedule Friday, July 19.
- Most ambulatory clinics will be closed until at least noon.

Sentara Martha Jefferson
- UPDATE 10:20am:
- Sentara Martha Jefferson facilities are far less impacted by the Microsoft outage.
- UPDATE 10:04am:
- Sentara released a statement indicating their facilities, including Martha Jefferson, are not majorly impacted:
- “We are closely monitoring the IT outage linked to the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Sentara does not utilize CrowdStrike, so our IT systems are not directly impacted. Normal operations remain in process at Sentara hospitals and facilities.”
DMV
- UPDATE 9:32am:
- Statewide DMV customer service centers are closed until at least noon, and online transactions are not available.
- The Virginia DMV will update the status on their website and social media.
Governor Glenn Youngkin
- UPDATE 9:32am:
- This morning, Governor Glenn Youngkin released the following statement on tech outages:
- “Amidst the global tech outages, overnight we have conducted an initial assessment to determine impacts across government agencies and departments for functionality. Critical health and safety systems, including 911 call systems and transportation infrastructure, are operational. However, airlines continue to experience significant disruptions. The assessment determined that government administrative functions are experiencing disruptions, and we are coordinating with local, regional, and federal authorities and private sector critical infrastructure partners to reestablish normal operations.”

- “Some Virginia hospitals and health systems have experienced impacts from the Microsoft Windows information technology outages related to the CrowdStrike software updates. The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA), in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and other agencies, are monitoring this situation and offering coordinating assistance as needed through both statewide resources and the Commonwealth’s regional healthcare coalitions.”
