CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – On WINA Morning News, Dr. Chris Holstege, a professor of emergency medicine at UVA Health, emphasized the importance of summer safety. With the season in full swing, Dr. Holstad addressed various concerns, ranging from firework-related injuries to heat-related illnesses and water safety.
Dr. Holstege highlighted the dangers of fireworks, particularly for children. “We certainly have seen plenty of injuries related to them.” He explained that injuries can range from severe burns to limb-related traumas, stressing the need for caution when handling fireworks.
Heat-related illnesses are another significant concern during the summer months. Dr. Holstege pointed out that certain medications, like Benadryl, can impact the body’s ability to sweat and cool down. He also mentioned the dangers of alcohol consumption in the heat, which can alter judgment and increase the risk of heatstroke. “People need to think about what medications they’re on and how that might impact too.”
Discussing the risks associated with drug use, Dr. Holstege explained that substances like methamphetamines and hallucinogenic agents can exacerbate the dangers of heat exposure by increasing body temperature and impairing judgment.
Water safety is crucial as well, with Dr. Holstege advising constant supervision of children near water and the use of life jackets. He stressed the importance of CPR certification, which can be life-saving in drowning incidents.
