Sue Brown Pickett of Charlottesville passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at Rosewood-Hollymead.
Born on July 21, 1936 in Danville, Virginia, the youngest daughter to the late Luther and Mary Brown; kind, loving, and generous parents with a strong Christian faith. Sue was baptized on September 27, 1936 in Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia.
A graduate of The College of William and Mary, she taught elementary school in Florida and Virginia, and as well as taking over the family shoe business in Newport News, Virginia. An avid bookkeeper, she found great joy in working at Sandra’s Boutique and The Eternal Attic.
When her husband, Robert T. Pickett III, accepted a teaching job at the new Piedmont Community College, the family moved to Charlottesville in 1972. She was an active community volunteer and served as President in Church Women United, The Wednesday Music Club, and the UVA Hospital Auxiliary. Sue and close friend Pat started a small business, Behind the Scenes, offering step-on tours of the wonderful Charlottesville and central Virginia area history.
She was an active member at St. Mark Lutheran Church and later, after a move to Lake Monticello in 1992, was a charter member of Grace and Glory Lutheran Church in Palmyra, Virginia.
Hospitality was her passion. Her house was always open to family, friends, and others needing shelter. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Tea parties were her favorite, both for the adults and especially for the grandchildren as they could bring their favorite dolls or tell stories.
Sue’s creative spirit was expressed through her love of music, art, and travel. Sue and her husband, Bob, traveled extensively enjoying global mission events and Elderhostels throughout the US and the world, especially visiting their daughter in Japan. As avid campers they loved the outdoors as well as boating on Lake Monticello.
Sue is survived by her sister Mary Francis Richie of Summerville, South Carolina, as well as children and families, including:
