CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Charlottesville area seems to have caught a break from not as much freezing rain falling in the area overnight last night as was forecast, keeping electricity on for the community. Much of the area was under either a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory before which both Dominion Energy Virginia and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative put out advisories of possible power outages through today (Thursday). However, temperatures through our area hovered near, but mostly above, freezing. As of 11am Thursday, the only significant outage in our area was 60 REC customers out in Madison County between Syria and Shenandoah National Park.
The big outage area was Dominion Energy customers in the Richmond area. Some 16,000 Dominion customers as of 11am Thursday were without power in the city of Richmond and Chesterfield, Henrico, and Powhatan counties. There were no large circuits out as they’re scattering small outages all over that area. Many are fallen trees and/or power lines and crews restoration times for many were not yet known.
