STAUNTON, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – State Police are investigating the death of a man in custody of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office upon arrival at the Middle River Regional Jail early Monday morning. The sheriff said it all started shortly after 3:30 Monday morning when they responded to the Sheetz in Fishersville for a report of man refusing to leave the property. Arriving deputies identified 39-year old Staunton resident Stefan Gerencser when they arrived and he agreed to leave without incident.
About an hour later, Gerencser called 9-1-1 requesting medical assistance but refused treatment and transport when EMS arrived… but a short time later agreed to be taken to Augusta Health by a deputy. He refused to stay at the hospital… then at 5:18AM, was arrested for public intoxication.
He struggled with a deputy and a hospital security guard who tried to get him into the deputy’s vehicle. Upon arrival at 5:45AM at the jail, the deputy found Gerencser unresponsive and not breathing, and life-saving measures failed. No other information is being released at this time.
