RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Preliminary numbers are in from State Police on July 4 holiday traffic deaths. State Police’s Corinne Geller says a total of 6 people died on Virginia’s highway during that 5-day counting period. While that’s 6 too many, it’s better than the 7 in just 2-days of last year’s holiday period. The fatal crashes took place in the City of Richmond and the counties of Bedford, Charles City, Henrico and Wythe counties.

Unfortunately, Geller says troopers were busy issuing more than 4000 speeding tickets, citing more than 2000 reckless drivers, and arrested 95 DUIs. Unlike the week after Memorial Day when State Police worked a still-high volume of traffic crashes, that has not been the trend post- July 4th… though Geller says 420 traffic deaths overall this year is about where we were last year.
