RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The state Board of Elections in Richmond has certified primary results — including the 5th Congressional District Republican race. That said, at the request of board IT Director Matthew Sears, extra certified copies of the results were made. This in anticipation of a recount request by Congressman Bob Good’s campaign, and possible litigation over some issues in the polling places.

But as it stands now, John McGuire is the certified winner by 374 votes, or point-6-percent, for Republicans in the 5th. That’s outside the point-5-percent margin where the state pays for a recount. The Good campaign has 10 days from the July 2, 2024 certified results to file the request.
McGuire released the following statement after the certification:
“Number one, I want to thank God. We could not have done this without my wife Tracy, our incredible team, and of course Trump! This is the honor of a lifetime. I look forward to continuing our fight for Virginia families every day in Congress. I humbly ask for your support in November, both for my campaign and for President Donald J. Trump. Without Trump and a Republican Congress, we will lose our great country.”
