LURAY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Firefighters have made great progress the past 36 hours on the 987-acre Rocky Branch fire in Shenandoah National Park near Luray. Operations Section Chief Pete Myers says they’ll be able to reopen the roughly 10-miles of Skyline Drive closed between Thornton Gap and Mathews Arm Campground 8 o’clock Wednesday morning. The fire is now 76% contained and Myers says an infrared air scan last night showed no real hot spots.

They continue to monitor and tamp down any spots that could flare up near the structures on Rocky Branch Road, but are really finding none. The part of the fire less contained at this time is to the northwest in wilderness area.
