Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – State Senator Creigh Deeds, who represents Virginia’s 11th Senatorial District, joined Morning News to share insights on his legislative priorities and upcoming community discussions. Deeds emphasized his commitment to issues like healthcare for student-athletes, solar energy, and community safety.
“The reality is it’s a short session. So, you’ve got to make good use of every single minute you’ve got,” Deeds remarked early in the interview, explaining his agenda for the day.
One key piece of legislation Deeds highlighted focuses on ensuring colleges can use student fees to support student-athletes’ healthcare and mental health needs. “The NCAA has passed down significant rules requiring that healthcare and mental health be looked after, as well they should, but the universities have to flexibility to provide that care,” Deeds explained.
Deeds also addressed the rising impact of data centers on Virginia’s economy, advocating for measures to prevent additional costs being passed onto everyday ratepayers. “I’m working to make sure that they’ve got the ability to set up a structure to make sure they can provide that power without imposing additional burden on their other customers,” he stated.
Looking ahead to a community safety forum in Charlottesville, Deeds stressed the importance of local involvement in addressing gun violence. “If there’s going to be a curbing or change in behavior, it’s going to come from the community, it’s got to bubble up,” he emphasized, commending local police chiefs for engaging with the public.
