CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) For the second straight week, a shooting on or near Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, and Charlottesville Police are responding by increasing their presence in the area.

A 30-year-0ld male suffered a gunshot wound to the leg at approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday. Police in the area heard the gunshots and responded. 34-year-old Lorenzo McAllister was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with reckless, handling of a firearm, possession of a concealed firearm and discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, according to a release from the city.

“Preliminary information suggests the incident may have begun inside Fitzroy and continued outside, where the shooting occurred,” the statement said.

An earlier social media post by the Charlottesville Police Department listed the area of the incident as being the area of 208 East Main Street.

That section of the mall was closed as a crime scene but has since reopened.

On June 7, a 25-year-old male was critically injured when he was struck by gunfire in the 200 block of 3rd Street NE, where police found him at approximately 1:26 a.m.

“In response to this trend, the Police Department has increased our presence in the area, including deploying multiple officers on foot patrol during peak hours,” the city statement said. “We are also actively coordinating with state partners, including the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC), as both recent incidents occurred at or near licensed establishments.”
