Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former Virginia delegate Sally Hudson has transitioned into a new role as an advocate for ranked choice voting, launching a nonprofit organization, Rank Choice Virginia. The nonprofit aims to promote more fair elections across the state.
“I’m a real big believer that every voter deserves to have their voice heard at the ballot box,” Hudson said, explaining her motivation for championing ranked choice voting. This voting system allows voters to rank candidates by preference, aiming to provide a broader representation of voter interests.
Hudson’s efforts have already seen progress. Charlottesville will use ranked choice voting for the first time during the June 2025 Democratic primary for City Council. Speaking about the process, she stated, “Everybody gets to vote for who they really like. Nobody has to pretend to vote for the lesser of two evils.”
Ranked choice voting eliminates the risk of splitting votes and encourages more honest voter preferences, she explained. Hudson remains optimistic that this system will create greater satisfaction with electoral outcomes and strengthen democratic participation across Virginia.
