Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Sally Duncan has launched her campaign for the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, seeking the Democratic nomination for the Jack Jouett Magisterial District in the June 17 primary. A history teacher and longtime local renter, Duncan says her decision to run is rooted in a desire to address urgent issues like housing affordability. “I really, really understand how expensive housing is here, how stressful it is… especially when you have a family,” Duncan said. She emphasized support for increased investment in affordable housing, including expanding the Housing Trust Fund and reducing barriers to development.
Originally from Michigan, Duncan moved to Charlottesville a decade ago after losing her family home in the 2008 housing crash. Her background as a UVA graduate and educator, having created and taught a local history course, informs her research-driven approach to governance. “I know how to find the answers… what are the documents we need to read, what are the policies we need to read,” she explained.
Duncan also emphasized the need for greater generational and experiential diversity on the board, noting, “Over 60% of the people are renters… I also think it helps to have a renter on the board,” she said about the Jack Jouett District. She supports expanding public transit options and improving accessibility, particularly around schools like Albemarle High.
