CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Ron Sanchez will not be retained as the University of Virginia’s men’s basketball head coach following his interim tenure during the 2024-2025 season, UVA Athletics announced Tuesday.

Sanchez stepped into the interim role on Oct. 18 after longtime head coach Tony Bennett retired. The Cavaliers finished the season 15-17 under his leadership. Sanchez has spent 11 seasons with the program across two tenures, including as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2014 and associate head coach from 2015 to 2018. He returned to Charlottesville in 2023 as associate head coach.

“I am grateful to Coach Sanchez for accepting this role during such a critical time for the program,” said Carla Williams, UVA’s Director of Athletics. “Ron and the staff provided great stability, guidance and support for the young men on the team and we are thankful for his commitment to UVA and the values that are foundational to Virginia men’s basketball.”

The university has not yet named a successor.
