HARRISONBURG, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Rockingham County School Board has voted to permanently remove seven books from it’s school libraries and classrooms for “sexually explicit content, violence, and explicit language”. The board this week reviewed nine of 50 books that were temporarily removed back in January.

Board Chair Matt Cross attempted to read from one of the books but was stopped by a school board attorney. Cross said he has a problem the panel could face legal charges if he read the passage out loud at a public meeting, yet some believe it’s okay that material go back into the library of our public schools.

The books permanently removed are Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Burned by Ellen Hopkins, Glass by Ellen Hopkins, Sold by Patricia McCormick, Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews, Nineteen Minutes by Jodie Picoult, and The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. The board approved More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera and Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli to be returned to the shelves.
