ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Rockingham County man died Tuesday evening after his Jeep overturned on private property, according to Virginia State Police. The crash happened between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the 12000 block of Alta Vista Lane. Investigators say a 1996 Jeep Cherokee was driving through a field when it went down an embankment and flipped over.

The driver, 76-year-old Richard L. Showalter of Linville, died at the scene. A 73-year-old woman, also from Linville, was in the Jeep and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Sentara RMH Medical Center for treatment. State Police said neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
