CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Rockingham County School Board can now check something off its to-do list: decide which books will be banned from library shelves. The list was 57 books long. Monday night’s meeting included a vote on the last six that were considered.

Rockingham County was one of 23 Virginia school districts or public libraries where people started grassroot campaigns to remove what they felt were offensive books over the last few years. The criteria were sexual content, explicit language and violence.

Banned for sexual content were “Rage,” “Out of Darkness,” “Go Ask Alice” and “Beloved.”

“The Bluest Eye” and “Slaughterhouse-Five” were deemed appropriate to return to shelves.

RPS’s list was second only to Hanover County, where 125 titles were removed. Rockingham County removed 38.
