Mrs. Roberta M. Fields fell asleep in death, 78, on June 13, 2024, at her home in Crozet, Virginia. She was born on June 18, 1945, in Waverly, Virginia, to Lester Diggs and Lillian Mason.
Roberta was preceded in death by two sisters Leslie Johnson and Mary Clark, two brothers, Guy Mason, and Stonewall Mason, as well as her great-aunt Mable Stevenson, also of Waverly, Virginia.
Roberta moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of 16 where she graduated from Maggie Walker High School in 1963. She worked many years as a transcriptionist in pathology, but retired from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia as a medical transcriptionist. Roberta Fields touched the lives of her neighbors who regaled her family with stories of her generosity and famous cakes made from scratch. Both neighbors and co-workers viewed Roberta as a cherished friend who will be truly missed.
Roberta is survived by her husband, Jonathan Fields of Charlottesville; her daughter, S. Lynne Valentine; six grandchildren, Marcellous Valentine, Porscha Valentine, Raymónd Valentine, Lamaar Valentine-Fields, Tiffany Valentine, and LaChelle’ Valentine-Taylor; multiple great-grandchildren; cousins; nieces and nephews; as well as her great-aunt and matriarch of the family, Maurice Covington.
