Robert Ashby Shaw, 82, passed from this world to be with God on February 29, 2024, from his home located in Charlottesville, Va. He was the son of Nora and Jack Shaw. He was married to Rachel Mae (Morris) Shaw on March 18, 1965. He had two sons, Scott Ashby Shaw and Tony Richard Shaw (wife Leslie). He was proceeded in death by his brothers, Claude Shaw and David Shaw. He is survived by his sister, Janet Shaw Perriello (husband James), along with his sister-in-law, Shelby Wood. He had special longtime friends Al and Cherry Payne, along with many Miller School friends.
Robert graduated from Miller School in June 1961 and was a member of the Miller School Alumni Association. He worked for the Virginia Department of Highways, the ABC Board, and the County of Albemarle Engineering Department, retiring after 30 plus years of service in the Virginia Retirement System.
Robert was an active member and supporter of Mount View Baptist Church, located in Charlottesville, Va. He supported his Sunday School class and served on the Properties Committee. Through the Church, he was a leader for Royal Ambassadors and supported Lottie Moon and Foreign and Domestic Missions. He annually supported the Samaritan Purse with money and items to fill the shoe boxes they distribute.
For years, he volunteered at the Historical Society on Wednesdays. He did some volunteer work for the WVPT auction, working on filling orders. Robert and Rachel donated a vehicle to the American Heart Association. They both supported the Virginia Nongame Wildlife Program with donations from their taxes.
Over the years, Robert has randomly donated to many causes such as disaster relief for the victims of the West Virginia floods, the Oklahoma City Disaster Relief, the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad, the American Cancer Society, Charlottesville Energy Share Program, Charlottesville Gas Assistance Program, Jefferson Board for the Ageing, Inc., the American Heart Association, and the United Way. He also helped to support the American National Red Cross, US Swimming National Swim-A-Thon, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 37, the Federal Order of Police FOPLA, and Law Enforcement Exploring Post 606.
Robert was a dedicated member of the Miller School Alumni Association. He spent hours editing, printing, and mailing an Alumni Newsletter along with the Alumni Banquet letter. He kept information on all Miller graduates. He and a friend worked faithfully on painting, wiring, and leveling the floor so the Alumni could have a special meeting place at the school. He finished a long table for use in the room, which they later had to vacate. He and other members worked on the Miller Graveyard, finding and updating the older graves and installing tombstones, an iron fence, and a flagpole. Every Thursday for years, he and other members mowed the graveyard and weeded around the stones. He took charge of the purchase of grave sites for the Alumni with the proceeds going to the Miller Alumni Fund.
He was a faithful supporter of the Miller Home for Girls located in Lynchburg, Va.
