CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has learned the start of roadwork to improve traffic flows as well as walkability and biking in the Pantops area has been moved up to start Fall 2026. Rivanna Supervisor Bea LaPisto Kirtley has advocated the project since her election to the Board and said the work initially wasn’t going to start until Fall 2027. The project includes improving the traffic signalization and installing crosswalks at the Route 250-Route 20 intersection, otherwise known as Richmond and Stony Point roads. Crews will also remove the common turn lane that runs in the middle of the east and westbound lanes, which LaPisto Kirtley calls a “auicide lane”, between Stony Point and Rolkin roads and replace it with a barrier.
The work is part of implementation of the Pantops Master Plan implemented in 2019 that includes “improving multimodal transportation options for all citizens”, and “encouraging high quality, walkable urban places and support development that protects watersheds and existing neighborhoods”. The project was put together with the help of the Pantops Community Advisory Committee that meets monthly. Click here to view the Pantops Master Plan.
