George Joseph (Jack) Hartwell, 81, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 17th, under hospice care. He was born in Queens, NY, on May 16, 1942, to George and Catherine Hartwell, both of whom preceded him in death, as did his younger brother, James Hartwell. Jack graduated from Saint John’s University with dual degrees in business and education and with a collegiate scholarship in baseball and track. Following his graduation in 1965, he briefly played baseball for the Yankee Rookies.

Jack had a lengthy career in finance before retiring and embarking on a new path as a real estate agent. In 1969, he constructed a cabin in the picturesque Catskills of upstate New York. Fond memories were made at the lake, where Jack and Peggy joyfully shared their moments with cherished family and friends.

Jack found immense pleasure in golfing with his close-knit group of friends, sharing countless laughs and jokes. He cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, entertaining them with his infectious sense of humor and an endless array of “dad” jokes. Jack’s affection for his dogs was evident to all who knew him. His adventurous spirit and profound love for family and life defined him. A resident of Lake Monticello in Palmyra, VA, Jack found joy in golfing. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Mary (Peggy) Hartwell, who stood by his side with unconditional love throughout their lives. He is also survived by his four children Kathleen (Kathy) Hershey, Theresa (Terri) Kesler, Christopher Hartwell (wife Kristi), and James Hartwell; along with his eight cherished grandchildren: Seth Kesler, Kendre Burnett (husband Scott), Alyce Martin (husband Tim), Molly Donovan (husband Keifer), Maddie Hershey, Gabriel Hartwell, Kennedy Hartwell, and Hayes Hartwell; and three great-grandchildren Brayden and Emma Burnett and Lucas Martin.

With deep gratitude in our hearts, we extend our sincere appreciation to Hospice of the Piedmont for the compassionate care extended to Jack during his illness.
