CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor John Reid says tax reform is a top concern among voters on the campaign trail. Referencing widespread frustration with Virginia’s personal property tax on vehicles, Reid stated, “I think it’s time to stop the car tax. You’re renting your car essentially from the government, even after you’ve paid the note off on it.” He also pointed to states like Tennessee and Florida as models for more competitive tax structures.
Reid is scheduled to appear with fellow Republican candidates Winsome Sears and Jason Miyares on July 1 in Vienna. Emphasizing party unity, Reid acknowledged the importance of collaboration despite differing backgrounds and experiences. “Unity also doesn’t mean there’s no conflict. It means that you put the conflict aside and you focus on what’s best for all of us,” he said. Reid brings experience as a former communications director for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a long career in media and public affairs.
On public safety, Reid voiced support for stricter crime policies, echoing initiatives like Miyares’ Operation Ceasefire. “We just can’t continue to tolerate the lawlessness… In Henrico, we’ve had a 74% increase in murders in the last five years,” he said. As the race progresses, Reid said he hopes to foster a respectful political environment, adding that despite policy differences, “there’s been a dignity in political interaction in Virginia that you might not have found in New York or New Jersey,” that he hopes to help restore.
