CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In the wake of Saturday’s firing of Virginia women’s basketball coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, star player Kymora Johnson, a Charlottesville native and former St. Anne’s-Belfield star, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report.
Agugua-Hamilton led the Cavaliers to the Sweet 16, becoming the first women’s team to advance there after starting in the First Four. But a week later, UVA dismissed her with one year remaining on her contract. USA Today reported the fourth-year coach was the subject of an internal investigation, one that involved allegations of staff mistreatment.
Then, Monday morning, On3.com reported Johnson, a first-team All-ACC selection with one year of eligibility remaining, had entered the transfer portal, following Sa’Myah Smith and Olivia McGhee, who announced on their social media accounts they were leaving the program over the weekend.
Agugua-Hamilton went 70-58 in four seasons at UVA, including a 29-42 mark in ACC games. This season was a breakthrough, with the Cavaliers finishing 22-12 and reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.
Johnson led the team with 19.5 points per game and also had the most assists and steals.
