CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville has grappled with the problem of outdated utility poles and abandoned telecommunications hardware cluttering its streets. That’s according to Kevin Cox, a local pedestrian advocate, in an interview with Courteney Stuart.
Cox believes negligence by Dominion and telecommunications companies have left numerous old utility poles standing next to new ones, creating hazards for pedestrians and drivers. “The junk left behind by the telecommunication companies litters the streets and gets in the way of pedestrians,” he said, citing instances where cables have caused accidents for people in wheelchairs.
However, he says recent actions by the city have caused reasons for optimism. “Well, the city has taken some action,” Cox said. “Mr. Sanders has apparently directed his staff to call in Dominion and the telecommunications companies and work together to find solutions to these problems.” This initiative has already led to the identification of 250 problematic poles and a plan to remove outdated ones systematically.
In addition, the city has started fining scooter company Veo $100 for every improperly parked scooter not moved within an hour, a measure intended to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians. Despite initial fines being issued, Cox noted that improperly parked scooters remain a common sight and emphasized the need for stricter enforcement.
Cox says he remains hopeful that continued efforts and community involvement will lead to safer, cleaner streets for all Charlottesville residents.
