Patricia Schmidt Dabney died peacefully with her family next to her on September 9, 2024 at Westminster Canterbury, Charlottesville, VA. Pat was born October 11, 1925 in White Plains, NY. Her parents were John R. Schmidt and Ann Britton. After spending many of her childhood summers in Charlottesville, she became a full-time resident in 1945. She married Hovey Slayton Dabney on February 14, 1948. Her wedding dress was made from the parachute that saved Hovey’s life in World War II. After her daughter, Jill, was married in the gown it was deconstructed and used in each of her granddaughters’ weddings.
Pat and Hovey had three children, Hovey Slayton Dabney, Jr., (Donna) who reside in Naples, FL and Richmond, VA. Jill Cave, (Scott) of Richmond, VA, and Ann Wampler, (Rick) who live in Champaign, IL. She also had 8 grandchildren, Slayton, Kate, and Drew Dabney, Jennifer Cave, Brian Cave, (Abby), Katy Wampler Shapiro, (Mark), Ally Wampler Bertsche, (Martin), and Patrick Wampler, (McKenzie). She was also Grandy to her 10 great-grandchildren.
Pat played an active role with the University of Virginia’s Medical Center Ladies’ Auxiliary. After years of volunteering at the hospital she served as a board member. A highlight from this experience was when she contacted local artists and helped set up the monthly art exhibits in the hospital lobby. She also volunteered for the Well Baby Clinic where she drove newborns, young children, and their parents to and from the clinic for their well-baby check-ups and immunizations. As an active member of the Charlottesville Community Chest, she recruited and organized volunteers. Pat was always involved in her children’s schools and attended their activities including room parties, plays, and athletic events. She was a big support for Hovey in both his professional career as a banker and civic life, including his time as Rector of the University of Virginia.
