Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): The Cavaliers have entered the business end of their preseason training. The Wahoos will have their first scrimmage this Saturday, where the coaching staff will gauge game readiness as the Week 1 showdown with the Richmond Spiders draws near. Below are some observations during media-permitted practice viewings through one week of training camp.
- The Quarterback battle between Anthony Colandrea and Tony Muskett is a decision very much still in the balance. That being said, the coaches have emphasized the importance of leadership, and field generalship in particular in the man their going to choose to be the starter. Muskett has led the team out onto the field from the indoor facility (where the team does their stretching) and does appear to be getting more attention and reps as the passing drills continue.
- There is a lot of focus being placed on the linemen on both sides of the ball. The O-Line, specifically the tight ends, have been impressive in repeated drilling of trench battles under the watchful eye of Dez Kitchings.
- On the defensive side, the defensive backs are showing great speed and hands right alongside the receiver corps in many route-running drills.
- Malachi Fields and Chris Tyree have started camp focused and determined, neither of them have dropped a high number of passes and have shown versatility in running a number of different routes.
We will continue to cover 2024 camp leading up to the Richmond game on August 31st, 2024.
