Not long after winner a gold glove for a stellar 2024 season at shortstop for the Cavaliers, UVA 4th year Griff O’Ferrell was announced as the 2024 winner of the Brooks Wallace Award, a year honor bestowed upon the best college shortstop in the nation.
In 249 chances he made only errors in 63 games that the Richmond native started for the Cavaliers in his final season in Charlottesville. To go along with his defensive efforts, he hit well at the plate in a season that saw the Cavaliers once again reach Omaha, he hit for a .324 average, notching 20 doubles, 5 homeruns, and 52 runs batted in. He also swiped 17 bases only being caught 4 times.
O’Ferrell is the first shortstop from an ACC team to win the award since 2017 after being a finalist for the award in both 2022 and 23 seasons. The award will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year, by which team he will likely have entered Minor League Baseball. According to Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com, he is projected to be taken in the 1st round of the 2024 MLB first year player draft.
