CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The University of Virginia will not be fined for fans coming onto the field following Saturday night’s 27-7 victory over rival Virginia Tech, an ACC source told Cville Right Now on Monday.

The conference determined there, “was no violation of the policy.”

UVA was fined $50,000 on Sept. 27 for a rapid rushing of the field by its end zone student section after the Cavaliers’ 48-38 double-overtime upset of then-No. 8 Florida State the day before.

A second violation of the ACC policy would have incurred a $100,000 fine.

In July, the ACC announced a new Event Security Plan that said “only student-athletes, coaches, officials, and authorized personnel are allowed in the competition area before, during, and at the conclusion of any competition. Further, visiting team personnel and officials must have the opportunity to safely exit the competition area before spectators may access the competition area following a contest.”

Against Florida State, students on the hill at Scott Stadium immediately stormed the field after FSU’s final pass was intercepted by UVA cornerback Ja’Son Prevard in the end zone, in front of Seminoles wide receiver Squirrel White. The fans charged over Prevard and White as UVA celebrated and Florida State’s team struggled to get off the field.

The two coaches, Virginia’s Tony Elliott and FSU’s Mike Norvell, were unable to find each other for a postgame handshake.

But Saturday night, after claiming the Commonwealth Cup for just the second time in the last 21 meetings with Virginia Tech, fans didn’t come on the field until after the Hokies had their chance to shake hands with the Cavaliers and begin heading to the locker room.

Elliott and Tech interim coach Philip Montgomery met near midfield before fans slowly trickled out onto the playing surface.

The win clinched a spot in Saturday’s ACC championship game in Charlotte for UVA (10-2, 7-1 ACC), and left the Hokies (3-9, 2-6) with their worst season since 1987.
