CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Malik Thomas scored 19 points, knocking down six 3-pointers, as No. 16 Virginia went on the road and downed No. 20 Louisville 79-70 on Tuesday night, the Cavaliers’ fourth straight win and first this season over a ranked opponent.

Virginia connected on 14 shots from 3-point range, including a key 3 by Johann Grunloh with 2:30 to play that pushed the UVA lead back to 10 points. Grunloh scored 16 and Sam Lewis added 15.

The Cavaliers beat Louisville for the 19th time in the last 22 meetings, despite a big night from former UVA star Isaac McKneely. McKneely scored 23 points to lead the Cardinals, going 5 for 12 from 3-point range.

Virginia took its biggest lead, going up 56-41 on a jumper by Thijs DeRidder with 12:25 to play. But McKneely scored 10 points down the stretch, helping Louisville get to down 74-68 with 1:16 to play.

The Cardinals would get no closer, missing their final seven 3-point attempts.
