CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The city is announcing former Asheville, NC Deputy City Attorney John Maddux as Charlottesville’s new City Attorney. A city release says Maddux’s application for admission to the Virginia State Bar has been approved, and upon being sworn in by the Virginia Supreme Court and appointment by the Charlottesville City Council, he will formally assume the title of City Attorney.
Maddux served the past decade in his Asheville position where a Charlottesville release says he “provided counsel on a wide array of municipal legal issues, including employment law, land use and zoning, policing, and complex intergovernmental matters”. Prior to his tenure in Asheville, he worked in New York City in corporate law and also served in the Raleigh City Attorney’s Office with a focus on environmental law.
The City Attorney’s position has been vacant since the September retirement of Jacob Stroman after not even a year on the job, after being exonerated during an administrative leave for an undisclosed complaint.
