Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – As the holiday season approaches, the pressure to maintain festive traditions can be overwhelming for many, especially caregivers. Melanie Benjamin, Executive Director at The Center at Belvedere, joined Morning News to share insights on how those caring for loved ones during this time of year can manage stress and find support.
“Holidays do increase pressure and stress on folks, especially folks who are caring for loved ones,” Benjamin noted.
Benjamin emphasized the importance of providing tangible support to caregivers, suggesting, “If you are a friend or loved one somebody whose a caregiver, you want to make sure that you are always open and able to listen… but also maybe change one thing which is ask specifically, what can I do to support you? Can I give you a few hours off? Can I come in and dust the furniture?”
To further assist those in need, the Center offers various support groups aimed at mental health and caregiver relief. Benjamin encouraged listeners to explore these options, advising, “Join a group where you can talk with other people and engage on the things that are the pressures of your life.“
As the holidays can bring both joy and stress, Benjamin emphasized the importance of self-care and seeking help, encouraging individuals to make a plan to prioritize self-care for themselves and their loved ones in the new year.
