Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The holidays can bring joy and connection but often come with stress, especially when navigating complex family dynamics. Dr. Joseph Tan, a licensed clinical psychologist and director of integrated behavioral health at UVA Health Family Medicine, shared valuable insights on managing holiday challenges during an interview on WINA Morning News.

“It’s really normal,” Dr. Tan reassured listeners, noting that a survey by the American Psychological Association found 41% of adults experience increased stress during the holidays, while only 10% report feeling less stressed. “It’s not something to beat yourself up with.”

Addressing family disagreements, Dr. Tan advised against avoiding uncomfortable conversations, suggesting they could lead to stronger connections. “If we take on what’s uncomfortable, that really pays off for us in the long run.” He also encouraged tackling tough conversations one-on-one to foster genuine understanding and closer relationships.

For parents navigating differing approaches with grandparents, Dr. Tan recommended assigning roles where grandparents can shine without undermining parenting rules. “Have them do what they’re best at…maybe creating those positive moments or experiences for the kids,” he explained.

As families prepare for the holiday season, Dr. Tan emphasized the importance of setting clear expectations, particularly for children. “Kids do great with expectations…we just want to make that clear no matter what the decision is.”
