CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A ribbon cutting Friday morning with National Intelligence Director Avril Haines, UVA President Jim Ryan, Senator Mark Warner and other in the Rotunda Room for UVA’s sixth university-level institute. Senator Warner as Senate Intelligence Committee said he’s had this National Security Data and Policy Institute in mind for a long time, and he couldn’t think of a better place than a couple of hours down the road at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Phil Potter is the institute’s executive director who says the institute is independent of, but will nest in, the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. The partnership includes the Batten School, the School of Data Science, the Biocomplexity Institute who are always friendly, but don’t always collaborate on projects like they could. The Office of the Director of National Security has a $20-million contract to use the University’s expertise in data science, artificial intelligence, research computing and public policy to address the country’s most pressing national security issues.
