Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): After a tough loss to Colgate on Sunday in front of the Wahoo faithful, Virginia Men’s soccer has swiftly corrected the course and gotten back to winning ways. With stormy weather looming, the Cavaliers took to the pitch and put five goals past the St. Joseph’s Hawks for their second win of the season.
It did not take long for the Hoos to break through, Tristan Beauvois laid a perfect cross in to Reese Miller, who stormed from the back line to notch his first goal of the season. Both teams traded blows with shots on goal at either end for the next few minutes, until another Virginia defender converted a great chance created by the Wahoo forwards. Nick Dang headed in a Daniel Mangarov free kick for his second goal of the season, and UVA’s second of the match. The Hawks were able to see out the first half with no more goals conceded but were unable to apply any meaningful pressure of their own.
St. Joe’s started better in the second half, winning an early corner, but the Hoos swiftly re-applied the pressure without relenting. In the 70th minute, the attack paid dividends. Graduate transfer Hayes Wood, on his debut for the Hoos, received an inch-perfect pass from Paul Wiese, going around the keeper to slot home the ball for his first goal at Klöckner stadium, after 52 starts and 21 goals at Lipscomb. The through ball proved to be an achilleas heel for the Hawks, as barely five minutes later, Reese Miller broke through again on an Umberto Pela pass to beat the keeper again for his second goal of the game. Max Talley wrapped the match with an 83rd minute outside-the-box shot, finishing off an authoritative 5-0 victory.
UVA Men’s Soccer heads to Maryland on Labor Day to face the Terps. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM on B1G+.
