DOOMS, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Augusta County north of Waynesboro. According to State Police, a 1994 Ford F450 was traveling north on Route 340, less than a mile north of Dooms Crossing Road, around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday when it veered into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator SE.
A 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt traveling south behind the motorcycle swerved to the right to avoid the initial collision and struck debris from the crash.

The motorcyclist, 57-year-old Terri L. Smith of Crimora, died at the scene.

The driver of the Cobalt, 31-year-old Julia F. Winegard of Grottoes, was not injured in the crash. The driver of the Ford, 44-year-old John F. Phillips of Broadway, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

A mechanical issue with the Ford is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.
