CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Minutemen Motorcycle Club’s annual Chili Cook-off for Breast Cancer Awareness month raised $1,800 on Saturday, funds that will benefit a local woman battling the disease.

Becky Layne, a single mother of three, was diagnosed with (invasive ductal carcinoma) on May 6, and underwent surgery on June 18. A week later, Layne lost her job.

The Cook-off included 14 teams which arrived at the Charlottesville Elks Lodge at 7 a.m. to begin cooking. All chili entered in the contest had to be cooked on site to qualify.

First place went to Andee Bonalewicz and David Glasscock, last year’s people’s choice winners. Second place this year’s people’s choice award went to Ben and Kirsten Elkins. Travis Dovell, Brandy Early and Alexis Dovell took third.

The judges included 3WV’s Tawne Hayes and Cville Country’s Uncle Pauly, past competitors in the cookoff.

Cook-off attendees could sample chili for a $5 suggested donation, and purchase baked goods and other handmade items to raise money to support Layne.

The Minutemen are known for visiting the area and performing charitable acts, including their annual motorcycle caravan to the Toy Lift, delivering toys for children.
