Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a heartfelt and unexpected announcement, UVA men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett declared his retirement just weeks before the start of the season. Appearing as a guest on Cville Right Now Live, Luke Neer, host of Best Seat in the House, shared his reflections on the press conference and its powerful atmosphere.
“When I walked into John Paul Jones Arena… everybody was silent. You could hear a pin drop. It felt as if you were at an event that mimicked a little bit, you know, a little bit of a funeral vibe,” Neer recalled during the interview. He described the scene as deeply emotional, noting that it wasn’t somber, but rather marked by an overwhelming sense of finality. “It was an emotional day… that’s the best way I can frame it from being there.”
Neer also weighed in on the timing of Bennett’s decision, which came as a surprise so close to the season opener. “There are some questions as to the timing of this,” he said, acknowledging the challenges for the team and newly named interim head coach Ron Sanchez as they prepare for the season. Neer emphasized Bennett’s loyalty to his staff and reflected on how this emotional farewell has impacted the program.
